First prize winner of the 1995 USA Prestigious National Guitar Concerto Competition,Mr. Tamayo has toured extensively throughout North and South America and Europe, performing and conducting master classes. Mr. Tamayo is quickly building a reputation as one of the preeminent guitarists of his generation. He began studying the guitar with his father, when he was five. His debut at Carnegie Hall with a solo recital was a sold-out performance for the Artists International Series. Since his arrival in the United States, Mr. Tamayo has performed extensively, giving solo recitals at the Oregon Bach Festival, in Chicago's Dame Myra Hess Series and for the Sixth International Guitar Festival among others. The "Washington Post" has said of Mr. Tamayo's talent, "One of the world's excellent classical guitarists...with fluent technique and expressive versatility." Mr. Tamayo is a recipient of career development grants from the Maryland State Arts Council, the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Bossak/Heilbron Foundation. He joined the faculty of the Pennsylvania Academy of Music in 1997.
